[30,000 SHU] This variety of Calabrian chili, called Diavolicchio, is the most used and grown in this southern Italian region. The Diavolicchio (meaning Little Devil) grows in bunches and is the most cultivated in the area. For those who like to travel, every year the region holds the "Italian Chili Festival" in a town called Diamante, where the Diavolicchio chili is used in most of the recipes for everyone eager to taste it.

Growing advice:

The seeds needs to be planted from March to April, and they need a rich and composted soil, avoiding stagnating water. At first the fruits will appear green, but as they mature they will assume the typical bright red colour and when fully grown, will measure between 2 to 3 centimeters.

The plant:

The plant loves the heat and needs to be placed in direct sunlight, because of this it needs constant watering, taking care that the soil fully dries in between irrigation, so as to avoid the aforementioned stagnating situation.

A typical disease of the plant is easily recognisable by dry and yellow leaves which will fall, in order to prevent this it's important to not over water the plant, making sure that it is receiving sufficient sun light and that your soil is rich with added compost. Also, antiparasitic products can be bought at any specialised gardening shop.

The fruits:

Once ripe, you can harvest your chilis, and for spicier results, you can leave the plant for a few days without water, before picking.

You can then enjoy your fruits, which will be delicious used in many easy recipes, conserves, jams and chutneys.
