Here we are again, talking about chilli peppers! Today it's time of the Peter Pepper, that stands out from the others thanks to its bizarre phallic shape.
Many people believe that this chili pepper is very spicy but it is not so. In fact it has a typical consistency of the pepper with a medium low spiciness level. Some people love extreme spiciness while others prefer a perceptible spiciness, so I recommend this variety to those who like to taste dishes with a mild spiciness, suitable for those who do not like extreme spiciness. The taste is very good and aromatic, as we mentioned earlier, the taste is reminiscent of a pepper. I personally cut half of it inside a meal to give an unmistakable additional flavour, followed by a slight spicy sensation that pervades the taste buds.
The plant is compact and bushy, it is one of the best suitable plants to be farmed on balconies. It can reach around 60cm in height and 30-40cm in width. The leaves are green and soft. The flowers have white petals with pendulous progression; from the moment they enter the flowering phase they can also be used as ornamental plants, but the best comes when the fruit reaches full ripening, making this plant bizarre and original, with its phallic shape.
As said before, the fruit has a phallic shape, the initial part is smooth while in the final part there are folds and contortions. On average they reach a size of 6cm. The immature fruit is green, but when it reaches maturity it changes to red. When the fruit is completely red you can remove it from the plant to taste it or you can keep the chilli pepper.
The farming of this variety is not particularly difficult. We suggerst to germinate the seeds in the first warm days of March, let the seeds germinate in the heat, checking that the temperature is around 20C°. The method we recommend to do this delicate initial operation is the paper towel method. Once the seeds have come to life and you will see the first rootlets, the seeds can be moved and placed in the ground with the root pointing downwards at a depth of about half a centimeter. Remember to water the soil, in this phase it must be moist, when you will see that the buds begin to come out and the first leaflets begin to develop, you can put them in the sunlight, from this moment on, they need as much light as possible to develop strong and healthy. When the plant has finally passed the delicate germination period and has a height of about 15-20cm, put it outside and place it in a larger vase. Be careful not to touch the roots, remember to remove the plant with all the soil lump. Roots represent 90% of the right development of the plant. If you still have doubts, see the folloqing guide: how to grow chillies.
All plants need high-quality soil or topsoil rich in nutrients for proper development, then move on to organic fertilizer if you want to give the plant, fruits and spiciness a sprint!
